Looking for a good camping knife/machete?
I was looking into the Kukri designs and was wondering what is an affordable, but still quality model. i was also looking at the $20 cold steel kukri but it seems a bit shabby. Thanks!
It’s a common belief that knives are a big camping necessity. Small ones can be very useful.
I’ve camped for over forty years now in UK, Europe, Africa, South America and Asia and the biggest knife I had apart from a machete in jungle warfare school and a couple of holiday jungle treks was a penknife with a three inch blade.
Most of those ‘survival knives’ in the shops with technical shapes and flashy holes are just silly.
Made to look good and make money from people who think they’re being hard cos they’ve got a big survival knife.
Proper Kukris have their particular design for a purpose. A kukri is mostly a chopping knife.
Good for chopping heads off. Taking a goat’s head off in one blow is the traditional coming of age ritual for Gurkha boys.
OK -ish for stabbing, but not great.Wrong balance and shape for that.
A small axe is far more useful when you’re camping than a ‘survival knife’ is.
I taught outdoor skills, mapreading and navigation, in the Army.
Nobody got a big knife issued to them on camping exercises and training courses, except for machetes in jungle school to clear paths through the liana and scrub.
Survived OK though. Standard issue pocket knife did fine….still does.
