Wool pads in summertime?
I just bought a Mayatex wool saddle blanket. I live in NC and I was wondering if that type of saddle blanket is going to be too hot on my horse? I don’t ride hard, I’m just a trail rider and I plan on putting a gel pad underneath the wool blanket. I’ve seen a lot of riders with wool saddle blankets, but are they really hot on a horse?
No- your horse may have more saddle sweat than usual on hot days. But if this is the saddle pad that makes you and your horse more comfortable under saddle then I’d stick with it.
Make sure however that you are regularly washing and drying out your saddle pad so your horse does not get an infection or contract a fungus.
