Rising from the ashes of the 2002/3 dragon boating championships comes…
The Sydney Phoenix Dragon Boat Club strives to be competitive whilst maintaining the main reason most people enter the sport; for the FUN of it!!! We take the social aspect of it as seriously as the sporting aspect, with much of the crew often having dinner or drinks after training, and many formal & informal social events dot the Sydney Phoenix calendar. The members come from many cultural & professional backgrounds, & we recognise that people have lives outside of the club, so we try to schedule our trainings & events so that the least number of people will be inconvenienced. Also, many people in the club have children, who we often bring along to our practices and regattas, so families, and indeed ANYBODY who wants to row and HAVE A GREAT TIME is welcome.
So What is Dragon Boat Racing? Well, firstly it’s a fun and friendly team sport. A dragon boat team consists of 20 paddlers, sitting two abreast in a dragon boat, plus a sweep at the rear and a drummer who sits at the front. Teams can be mixed, or comprise of either men or women. The ingredients of a successful dragon boating team are timing, strength and endurance, mixed together with great teamwork. Races are exciting for both competitors and spectators as the boats take on an adrenaline charged sprint for victory with every beating of the drum. With local, national and international events, as well as a multitude of Corporate events, dragon boating is now a common sight on many waterways around Australia throughout the summer season. Want to know more? Come and join us for training on Sundays 10.00am, and Tuesdays 6.30pm & Thursdays 6.30pm (during on-season) at 1 Bank St, Pyrmont.
